Blazers soccer beats Grayling in goal-fest

GRAYLING - During the pre-season, which included a frustrating 2-1 loss to non-league rival Forest Area on a penalty kick, Kalkaska couldn't find its offense.

That problem has apparently been solved. But, now it seems as though the defense has lost a little of its edge. Plug one hole, and another opens up.

At least, though, the Blazers were able to score enough goals to win in a 6-5 offensive festival over Grayling in the Northern Michigan Soccer League.

Kalkaska spotted Grayling an early lead, and then came storming back in the second half. It took three goals in the final two minutes of the game for the Blazers to pull out the win. Two players had two goals apiece as the Blazers continued their stunning turnaround from their early-season woes, and stamped themselves as legitimate conference championship contenders.

Yes, there's still a lot of season left to be played. Still, it's becoming clear to everyone else in the league that Kalkaska is developing into an extremely frightening opponent to play. Ed Smith and Mike Brady scored two goals apiece to lead the Blazers' attack, but they were matched by Grayling's tandem of Max Kluge and Mike Olson, who also scored twice each. In the end, it was left to Garrett Guy and Colton Gelinas to produce the two other goals that proved to be the difference in the game - although they didn't come at the end.

Josh Wakefield started and played the entire game in goal for the Blazers. He had recorded shutouts in his two previous games. Despite giving up five to Grayling, he posted his third straight win.

Boyne City snapped Kalkaska's winning streak with a 3-1 victory last Thursday.

The Blazers scored their only goal eight minutes into the game. Kalkaska was limited to just five shots on goal in the first half, and nine for the game. The Ramblers peppered the Blazers' with 20 shots on goal.
