After dispatching the Vikings (25-16, 25-8, 15-6), the Blazers sat while the Elks and Vikings matched up, and then handed the Elks a 3-0 loss (25-14, 25-12, 15-9). Kaiti Jones paced the Blazers' attack with 26 digs, 6-of-8 serving with one ace, 17 kills and two blocks. Megan Dunn made 34 setter assists, came up with nine kills at the net and made eight digs in the middle and back rows on defense. Marissa Taylor was the Blazers' leading server, going 14-of-16 with one ace, and she also topped the team with 11 kills. Maria Harbour had a perfect night at the service line (12-of-12) and had eight digs. Abby Merrill also had a big night for the Blazers, finishing 14-of-14 serving with three aces and four kills. "We came out very strong in our first home performance, and I was extremely proud of the level that we played to tonight," Kalkaska coach Deanne Royston said. Thursday night the Blazers traveled to Charlevoix and lost in four games, 11-25, 19- 25, 25-17, 21-25. Dunn was 10-of-10 serving with one ace, 27 assists and five kills. Taylor finished 9-of-9 serving and had four solo blocks. Jones went 16-of-16 serving with 10 digs and 9 kills. Merrill had five kills and six digs. Ponstein had eight digs and was 7-of-7 serving. "We started out slow and then fired up in the third game," coach Royston said. "We fought hard from that point, but being down two games early was quite a hurdle." Kalkaska reached the semifinals of the Kingsley tournament on Saturday, Sept. 8, where the Blazers lost to the Does in two games, 17- 21 and 19-21. Dunn had 62 assists, seven aces, 16 kills and 21 digs. Jones chipped in with 36 kills, 40 digs, two blocks and was named to the six-person All-Tournament Team. Merrill pounded down nine service aces, had 11 kills and 27 digs. Hendry had four aces and 27 digs. Kara Ponstein was 34-of-37 serving with two aces. Khrysten Chandler had 12 kills, five assists and three blocks. Taylor was out with an ankle injury, and that hurt the Blazers at Kingsley. "Maria Harbour stepped in and played Marissa's front row position, and that was a tough position for her as she is five-six," Kalkaska coach Deanna Royston said. |
