Sports PUBLISHED:
Jeff Clark scored the only touchdown for Kalkaska on a 33-yard run, and the Blazers added a two-point safety in a 10-6 victory that evened their season record at 2-2, and put them at 1-1 in the Lake Michigan Conference. Clark added the twopoint conversion after his touchdown. Corey Wilson led the rushing attack for the Blazers with 88 yards on 21 carries. David Chalker had 53 yards on 19 attempts. Clark finished with 42 yards rush-ing on nine carries. Alex Miltenberger was 2-for-4 passing for 19 yards to go with his 16 yards on the ground in five carries. That gave Kalkaska 200 yards on offense. The defense held Harbor Springs under 100 yards on offense. Ethan Miltenberger and Alex Higgins led the Kalkaska defense with 5 tackles each, Jake Heller had 4 1/2 tackles and Dan Tinkle added 3 1/2 tackles. John Kasza had two blocked passes, and Eric Nixon recovered a fumble. "The defense is what really saved us a lot," coach Collins said. "We only ran four plays on offense, in our terminology. We really scaled things back, and just tried to control the football. "Harbor Springs is getting better. You never know week-to-week what's going to happen in this conference." Kalkasaka had trouble with the slippery conditions right off the bat, fumbling the ball away on the opening kickoff, and the Rams recovered on the Blazers' 6-yard line. The Rams quickly capitalized on the turnover, scoring on a fouryard run to take the lead in the first quarter. But, the Blazers' defense stiffened after that. It bent at times, but never broke. Harbor Springs coughed up two points to the Blazers on a safety when the Rams snapped a punt out of the end zone. Kalkaska is at Thirlby Field in Traverse City on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. game with LMC co-leader St. Francis. The Gladiators are 2-0 in the league and 3-1 overall after knocking off previously undefeated Boyne City, 34-20, last Friday night. |
