John Thomas Adkins Jr.



John Thomas Adkins Jr., age 76, of Roscommon, died Sunday, August 19, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Grayling.

Services were held Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Walsh Funeral Home, Roscommon with Dr. David E. Hansen officiating.

Burial was in Roscommon Village Cemetery with full military honors provided by Charles M. Engel VFW Post #4159 and American Legion Post #96.

He was born in Pike County, KY., July 17, 1931, to John Thomas Adkins and Mary Jo (Fugat) Adkins. He married Elizabeth F. Moore in Tacoma, WA, Feb. 29, 1952. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a quality control inspector for Chrysler for over 37 years, retiring in 1981. He moved to Roscommon from Detroit in 1989. Mr. Adkins was a member of the VFW and the North American Hunting Club. He loved hunting, fishing, shooting and gardening and taught Sunday school at Temple Baptist Church in Detroit.

Mr. Adkins was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Collis H. Adkins; two sisters, Mildred F. Abbit and Margaret L. Simon; and a son-in law, John W. West. He is survived by his wife; five children, David S. and his wife Kathy Simon of New Jersey, Anna L. West and Thomas A. Adkins, both of Redford, Marylou Adkins of Battle Creek and Linda S. and her husband Dale A. Tussey of Kalkaska; eight grandchildren, Debbie (John), Felicia, Margaret, John (Chris), Robert, David (Rachel), Tammy (Ken) and Angela; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
