Summer Daze was family fun

KALKASKA - The community was invited to celebrate summer with the Kaliseum on Saturday, Aug. 18. The event was an effort to let families know what the Kaliseum has to offer, and to generate greater family participation.

For $15, a family up to five persons enjoyed a barbecue with hot dogs, chips and drink, as well as swimming and roller-skating in the ice arena, raffle drawings, and games with prizes. Individual tickets typically sell for $3 for Kalkaska residents and $4 for non-Kalkaska residents to swim or skate. On Saturday, the added fun was the barbecue and other activities that were included in the price. According to Kaliseum staffer, Jamie Henry, more than 100 adults and kids participated in the day of fun activities.

Although Kaliseum personnel were happy with the turnout, the hope is that future events would attract an even larger participation. A talent show from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and an outdoor movie at dusk were cancelled when it appeared there would not be enough public turnout.

"We're trying to get more families to become involved. Our membership prices are very reasonable. We offer discounted membership to businesses that encourage their workers to use the Kaliseum," Henry said. She said the Kaliseum board is looking at options for next year to build an annual event. A number of businesses contributed for prizes that were given away in drawings during the day.
