"We are striving to provide eco-friendly, sustainable, profitable, alternative fuels" said managing member, Bill Koucky. He and the other managing member, Bruce Soloway, hope to obtain this goal by contracting with local farmers to grow canola. NMB, in conjunction with the Traverse City nongovernmental organization, SEEDS, and DLEG/ Energy Office, is holding the free workshop for farmers and interested community members to learn from the canola experts. MSU Professor, Russ Freed will talk about canola varieties and the growing process; NMB will speak about their company and their hopes to partner with local farmers; canola farmers and seed representatives will also join the discussion. "We hope to get farmers from the area interested in growing canola, provide resources to plant canola, and finally provide a local market for them to sell to," Caitlin Koucky, event coordinator, said. Canola is an oil seed crop which grows well in Michigan and can be locally processed to make biodiesel for Michigan cars, buses, trains, and farm equipment. According to NMB, canola can help keep businesses local and community centered, as well as help the environment though the promotion of alternative fuels. The workshop will be held on Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the plant site, 2926 SW US 131, South Boardman, Mich., 49680. The workshop is free and open to interested community members, however, organizers request an RSVP. A free lunch barbeque will conclude the event.
