Raptors to descend on County Fair

KALKASKA - The Kalkaska County Fair will have unique visitors swooping in to make an appearance on Friday, Aug.1.

Alison Falldin, a raptor care and education specialist with the organization NorthWings of SEE-North, out of Harbor Springs, will be bringing five of her organization's eight permanently injured, non-releasable birds for fairgoers to see. All five birds will be raptors, or birds of prey.

"At the fair, visitors can expect to have up-close viewing and photo opportunities with the birds," Falldin said. "They will also be able to touch wings and talons and ask questions of the volunteers and staff that work with the birds."

Along with several volunteers, Falldin cares for the NorthWing's birds of prey.

The birds being brought to the fair include a barn owl (Belfry), two red-tailed hawks (Maggie and Marley), a barred owl (Luna) and an eastern screech owl (Chilli).

The barn owl is a human imprint into the program and is 10 years old. Both red-tailed hawks are impaired by broken wings which they received from being hit by cars and are 14 and six years old, respectively. The barred owl and screech owl are both blind in their left eye, with the barred owl needing its eye to be surgically removed after a fall when it was still a baby. Luna is 14 years old, while Chilli is 6 years old.

The NorthWings programs teach about conservation, raptors and the world shared by humans and birds of prey. The organization does school programs, summer camps, facility tours, birthday parties, lectures and special events. Funding for their presentations comes via memberships, bird adoptions, programming, foundation contributions and public donations.

NorthWings is currently working on moving their facility to the Boyne Highlands, but are awaiting site plan approval. If anyone would like to see the birds at their current facility, they may call Alison at 231-758-2769 or e-mail her at Alison@seenorth.org.Birds" Alison@seenorth.org.Birds are currently being houses about seven miles north of Harbor Springs downtown area, near M-119.
