Hill heads to national finals



KALKASKA Ð Emily Hill is preparing for next week's National High School Rodeo Finals, after qualifying in all seven events at the Michigan High School Rodeo State Finals June 9 and 10.

Hill, a 16-year-old and senior at Kalkaska High School, won the MHSRA Queen and All-Around Cowgirl. She also was the champion in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping and cutting.

She was reserve champion at goat-tying and fourth in team roping. The national is a 10-day event, starting July 19 in Springfield, Ill. Hill is the first competitor ever to qualify for all seven national events.

The sanctioning body is made of 46 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia. She's been riding since age five and is a member of the National Honor Society and is class president.
