500 and counting

KALKASKA -Time was running out on the Kalkaska baseball team. It had few chances remaining, to give coach Bill Vandergriff his 500th career victory, before the season ended. Against Harbor Springs, May 21; the Blazers earned a sweep to put the coach at the 500-mark.

"They were really hoping to be the team that got to 500," Vandergriff said. He said he didn't contemplate how long he'd be Kalkaska's baseball coach, when he first took the job. "I'm not that long-sighted, never though about how many years or how many wins," Vandergriff said.

The Blazers extended the sweep over Harbor Springs, into a four-game win streak, with another sweep over Suttons Bay, May 23. They won 4-3 and 4-2, over the team they expect to see in the opening round of district play.

Craig Miller won the opener, with Grayson Myas getting three hits and an RBI. Donnie Bush pitched the second game and had an RBI to help his cause. Dan Tinkle led the offense with two RBI. Bush had nine strikeouts and allowed four hits. The sweep over Suttons Bay was a quality win for the Blazers, going into a rematch in districts this weekend. "We got a sweep, but it will be a whole different ballgame this weekend," Vandergriff said. "Neither team showed everything they had."

The Blazers play at the Kingsley district.
