Local News PUBLISHED:
The purpose of the "first shovel" event was to create awareness of the upcoming construction of a path that originates at the Kaliseum site, and extends along the outer border of the village. Construction will take place in areas where there is public traffic, especially people who would want to access Tball, soccer, and other sports areas. The committee, especially concerned about the safety of children, has requested special help from citizens to avoid entering the area of construction. The KART trail is a collaboration of the Village of Kalkaska and MDOT, funded with federal highway dollars, with oversight by Northern Michigan Council of Governments. Federal monies come from a fund allocated specifically for a region-wide trail. According to MDOT sources, the funds cannot be used for any other purpose. The KART trail is part of the region-wide project, running across the west side of Michigan from Benzie to the Straits of Mackinaw. Construction began Tuesday, May 29, and is expected to take 30 to 40 days. This segment of the project should be done by mid-July, according to committee sources.Ê The trail will be restricted to non-motorized vehicles such as bicycles and skateboards, and walkers. An exception to the non-motorized rule would be a wheelchair that requires a motor. Anyone with questions about the project can contact the Village of Kalkaska, MSU Extension, or a member of the KART committee. |
