Blazer boys third at LMC meet

KALKASKA -Paul Grieve had two first- place finishes, and Michael Cleggett picked up another to lead the Kalkaska boys track team to a third- place finish overall at the Lake Michigan Conference track and field championships at the Blazers' facility on Wednesday, May 23.

The Blazers scored 101 team points, but it wasn't enough to overtake league champion Charlevoix (160 1/2) or runnerup Harbor Springs (105) in a tight competition.

Grieve, a two-time regional champion the week before, reached the finish line barely a couple of seconds ahead of Trey Graham of Harbor Springs to win the 1600-meter run in a time of 4:31.80.

He captured his other league title in the 3200-meter run, and this time it wasn't nearly as close. Grieve had a time of 9:55.73, beating Grayling's Nathan Peters by almost a minute.

Cleggett, who'll also be competing at the state championship meet near Grand Rapids on Saturday, June 2, added a league championship to his season's haul by winning the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.27 seconds.

The Blazers' won the 800-meter relay event as Marc Wallace, Cleggett, Joshua Wakefield and Joe Paladino combined for a time of 1:35.16.

Other point-getters for the Blazers included Nick Higgins, who contributed a third place finish in the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 7 1/2 inches, and Joshua Wakefield in the long jump with a fifth place leap of 18 feet, 5 1/4 inches.

Kalkaska's 3200-meter relay team of Jesse Moggo, Dylan Rosenthal, Alex Swoverland and Paladino finished second in a time of 8:31.89.

Moggo was third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.14, and Wallace finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.55 seconds.

In the girls meet, Kalkaska scored 27 points. Charlevoix won only one event, but won the trophy with 145 points. Boyne City finished second with 123.

Katherine Robinson finished third in the discus with a throw of 102 feet, 7 1/2 inches and she was also third in the shot put with a heave of 30 feet, 1/2 inch.

Amanda Cronin contributed a sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 11 3/4 inches. Kelsey Peel finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.82 seconds.
