"We took a few guys up there and didn't do too bad, considering the weather," Meyer said. Forest Area ended up leaving early since it didn't have the numbers to effectively compete. The Warriors didn't have enough guys to put together any relay teams, and the lure of the meet soon lost its luster. It was also a wet and cold day which made the decision to get back on the bus and go home all the more appealing. Although they were shorthanded, the Warriors did manage to come away with a third and fourth in the 100-meter dash. Even the few girls Forest Area does have performed well in the conditions. Forest Area was scheduled to compete at Inland Lakes on Monday, and then participate in the Manton Invitational on Friday. The competition is expected to be fierce at Manton, but the Warrior boys are determined to add a third invitational title to their resume this spring. "It's a great thing," Meyer said. "For a small school that usually fields about 9 or 10 people for track, to have the number of boys we have this year and to accomplish what we have is awesome." Luke Rookus has already run the additional qualifying standards for states, and Justin Gordon is also on course to make the finals. But with the Warriors shifting regionals and competing at Frankfort this year, the challenge will be even greater. "There'll be bigger schools at the Frankfort regional," Meyer said. "If those guys are going to do it, they'll have to do a lot of work between now and then. "I thought we were going to repeat again with our relay team, but injury and sickness has bit us this year." Manton will be a true test for the Warriors. "That's always a tough meet," Meyer said. "I think Manton is going to be in our region, too. "It's always a good look at the stuff ahead of us, the kind of work we have to do. "We're still a young program. We're pretty excited. I get all of these guys (most of them, anyway) back next year." |
