Girls track showdown goes to Blazers

KALKASKA - It's all about teamwork, no matter the sport. And it was teamwork that proved the difference for Kalkaska's girls track team in a 58-30 dual meet victory over area rival Forest Area on Monday, April 30.

"The girls ran well," Blazers' coach Andy Henderson said. "They were willing to fill in and run some events that they aren't real fond of, to help the team.

"There are a few girls that are maturing on and off of the track. Dana Otto is running very well, and is a leader in practice by actions, as is Amanda Cronin. Cronin is only a sophomore, but has matured tremendously in the past year. I hope that some of the other girls will continue to work hard, and follow these ladies' lead."

Kalkaska started off strong, sweeping all four places in the shot put, and the momentum never faltered after that.

Leading off in the shot put was Katherine Robinson, who garnered first place with a throw of 28 feet.

Following her lead were Liz Hoose in second place with a throw of 25 feet, 9 inches; Sondra Troup taking third place with a throw of 22 feet, 5 inches, adn Ashley Bonofiglio in fourth place with a throw of 14 feet, 3 inches.

The same foursome swept the discus as well, in the same order of finish. Robinson was first (95 feet, 5 inches), Hoose took second (84-5.5), Troup finished third (69-4) and Bonofiglio came in fourth (32-9.5).

"Katie Robinson has been in a slump in the shot put," Henderson related, "but has been throwing pr's (personal records) or close in the big meets.

"Liz Hoose is a pleasure to have back this year after taking her sophomore year off. She is starting to push Katie. Sondra Troup is a great surprise. She is starting to be much more competitive in most meets."

Although they didn't sweep the 800-meter run, the Blazers came close to doing so, with Otto finishing first in a time of 2:55, while Kathryn Babcock took second in 3:06.

"Katie Babcock just moved up to the 800, and is doing an awesome job," Henderson remarked. "She has improved her times by 20 seconds in the last week alone."

The Blazers also won the 200-meter dash, with Kelsey DePeel doing the honors with a time of 29.9 seconds. Caitlin Flohe was fourth in 32.65, and Ashley Mallory had fifth in 36.62. Van won the 1600-meter run in 7:37.10.

Hannah Ball finished third in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 3 inches, while Sydnie Van was fourth at 4 feet, 1 inch.

Cronin picked up a third place in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 1 inch and Ashley LaFayette was fourth with her jump of 12 feet, 1/2 inch. Flohe recorded a fourth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.95 seconds and Ashley Mallory was fifth in a time of 16.79 seconds.

Megan Marks had a first place for the Warriors in the high jump at 4 feet, 5 inches adn Kendall Willard was second at 4 feet, 4 inches. Willard took the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 10 inches and Becca Arpan was second at 13 feet, 3.5 inches.

Willard also won the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.88 seconds, with Krystal Prott second in 14.89 and Arpan third in 14.92.

Marks finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 3:09.67, and Megan Adams was fourth in 3:20.05. Willard placed second in the 200-meter dash in 31.40 seconds, and Arpan finished third with a time of 31.86.
