Warriors take first

JOHANNESBURG -- Ignoring painful shin splints and sore ankles that slowed, and even sidelined a few athletes, the Forest Area boys' track team keeps forging ahead.

The Warriors came through with another strong performance on Wednesday, April 25, with a first place in what turned into a triangular meet at JohannesburgLewiston.

Forest Area scored 64 points for first. Pellston was the third team in the mix. Gaylord St. Mary and Alanson did not show up. "It was a bad day for a track meet," coach Ryan Meyer said. "It was cold and windy. I had a lot of kids coming up with a lot of injuries, and some muscles that were sore, so I didn't want to push them too far. "We have a big week this week, with three track meets. We kind of took it easy and were still able to come out on top. It was a big day for the underclassmen.

"They were absolutely willing. I was able to shuffle some kids around in some of the relays, and they were right there willing to step up and take the spot of an upperclassman. So, I was real proud of them for that." Greg Kinney led the way in the field events for the Warriors with a first place in the high jump, clearing 6 feet.

Travis Park won the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 3 inches. Justin Richard came in fourth with a throw of 32 feet, 3 inches. Park also was first in the 400meter run with a time of 59.12 seconds, and Lucas Okabayshi (a foreign exchange student from Brazil) finished third in a time of 1:04.4. It was Okabayshi's first time in competition. Another first place came in the 100-meter dash where A.J. Freeman won with a time of 12.07 seconds. Johnny Brown was third in a time of 12.23 seconds.

Brown finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25 seconds flat, while Justin Gordon was second in a time of 25.33 seconds. Sam Runkel had a first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:29.5. David Drew was fourth in a time of 2:47.4.

Justin Gordon took a second place in the pole vault with a height of 9 feet, 6 inches. Finishing third behind him was Anthony McQueen, clearing 7 feet, 6 inches.

Also taking a second place was Brown in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 8 1/2 inches.

Brandon Archaumbalt got a second place in the discus with a throw of 105 feet even. Park took third in the discus with a throw of 93 feet, 1 inch.

Richard picked up a second place in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 20.65 seconds. "I think something was wrong with that time," Meyer said. "It should be right around 17 or 18 seconds. I think they goofed it up."

Runkel was second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:47. Brandon Rookus took second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 46.84 seconds.

The 3200-meter relay team of Park, Rookus, Runkel and Archaumbalt took second in a time of 3:59.8.

On the girls' side, Kendall Willard won the long jump with a personal best leap of 13 feet, 9 inches. Megan Monks had a fourth in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 1 inch.

Willard also placed in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.76 seconds. Forest Area was at Kalkaska on Monday for a dual meet, travels to Bellaire today and is at Brethren for an invitational on Saturday.
