The Warriors scored their first goal of the season in the first half of last Friday afternoon's match at Kalkaska. It gave the team a huge lift, even though the Blazers led, 5-1 at the break. Forest Area scored four more goals in the second half, and held the Blazers to just two. But the end result was a 7-5 loss, and left the Warriors 0-3 on the season. "We just picked our intensity level up, and started moving more in the second half," Warriors' coach Ron Stremlow said. Lauren Kneer tallied the Warriors' first goal of the season on an assist from Cassie Magee. Forest Area opened the scoring in the second half, as Emily Pojar converted a pass from Magee. Magee got into the scoring column herself a little later in the second half. Kari Helsel got the assist. Katie Moran netted the Warriors' fourth goal on a penalty kick. She got the team's final goal off an assist from Megan Birgy. "As you can see, we had a lot of people in on the scoring and assists, which is good," Stremlow said. "I thought that was positive. We got more active in the second half. "I just thought we stood around a lot in the first half, watching them (the Blazers) move around. There were two differnt halves for us." Holly Gribble played in goal for the Warriors in the first half, and had eight saves. Tina Preston minded the goal in the second half, and had six saves. Michelle Kurtzall and Jennifer Gill both had outstanding defensive games for the Warriors. Last Monday, the Warriors lost at Gladwin, 4-0. Preston had 11 saves in goal the first half, while Gribble finished with 12 saves in the second half. Pojar and Amanda Richards were credited with playing superbly on defense. Gladwin had a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half. "We had some good looks," Stremlow said. "We had 12 shots. We just didn't get one in. But, it was pretty windy, and that was only the third time we'd been outside all year. We only have six girls who played last year, so the numbers are deceiving. "I think the more we play, the more we'll improve, just because a lot of girls haven't played." The Warriors lost to Benzie Central, 6-0, in another road game. It was 3-0 after the first half. Preston was the goalie for the Warriors and had 13 saves. Birgy and Moran topped the defensive charts for the Warriors in that game. "We had 11 shots in that game," said Stremlow. "They (the Huskies) were very quick, and they passed well. We struggled to handle them." |
