KALKASKA - Sue Vowels, owner of ReMax in Kalkaska was the first to put a big fish in front of her business.
"I want to mount it on that pole," she said, as she pushed the lawn ornament in to the ground.
The fish are available to anyone interested but the idea was sparked at a Downtown Development Authority meeting.
"We are encouraging business owners to buy the fish and put them up to make the village unique," Vowels said. "We're trying to promote the community."
There will be no proceeds, Vowles said. The idea is not a money-maker.
"During a DDA meeting, were discussing promoting our community," she said. ""deas started to flow and I mentioned these."
Vowels had stumbled across The Columbus Tree in Ithaca, near Lansing. She passed it on her way to a broker meeting in Lansing.
"They have such a nice variety," Vowels said. ""I've bought a moose, a turkey and some other ornaments from them. So, I had a prototype of the fish made."
The ReMax office has a reputation for being community-minded. They put out the flags between the sidewalk and the road along Cedar Street before the Fourth of July, among other activities.
Vowels has big plans for her fish, that did not yet have a name at press time.
"I can decorate her for every season," Vowels said. "She can carry a fishing pole. She can carry a flag .
"We''e very excited about the possibility of all businesses being involved in this."
As of Friday, April 13, Vowels had five fish available for sale.
Anyone interested in buying or ordering a fish should call Vowels at 231-258-8046. They are available in a limited variety of colors.
