When the 8 a.m. Meeting started the room was crowded with residents, but as the meeting progressed the residents dwindled. At the end, when the mission statement was adopted, the only people left were a reporter and the union representative. The mission statement is reprinted in a separate article. In other business, commissioners authorized office manager Rebecca Jerry to attend a human resources and finance conference in Bay City in May. Casting the lone dissenting vote was Vice Chairman Jim Green. Jerry had originally requested herself and payroll clerk Brenda Smith to attend, but board members felt the cost was too prohibitive for two to attend. The conference fee is $120 and the room is $82 plus tax per night. "I think the clerkÕs deal would be a good one," Green said, indicating that both could attend the meeting later this month in Cadillac. The fee for that is $20, which includes lunch. "I just canÕt see where we need to send two people to this other thing. I think we would get more out of it if we got the computer man to come in for a few hours rather than listening to him talk in a roomful of 100 people. Everything you do is going to be expensive." Green said it was not the present board that caused the problem, but alleged that other employees left and the county road commission owed them a large sum of money, leaving them in the hole in which they presently in.
