Sled driver dead at scene



BLUE LAKE TWP. - Sheriff Bill Artress reported that the Kalkaska County Sheriff's Office accident investigation team is investigating a fatal snowmobile crash that happened on Starvation Lake in Blue Lake Township this past weekend.

Kalkaska County Central Dispatch received a call reporting Rick L. Richcreek, 42, of Syracuse, Indiana, missing after he did not return to the cabin where he was staying in Blue Lake Township.Ê

Richcreek was reported to have left the Hide Away Bar at approximately 10 p.m., last Saturday night.Ê

According to KCSO, family and friends became concerned when he did not return to the cabin and called Kalkaska County central dispatch, reporting Richcreek missing, at 12:38 a.m. Sunday morning.Ê

The crash site was located at approximately 7:15 a.m. Sunday morning, according to the release fro KCSO.ÊÊ

The preliminary investigation into the crash indicates that Richcreek, who was driving the Ski Doo snowmobile, was going across Starvation Lake.

According to the release, Richcreek lost his sense of direction while on the lake.Ê Richcreek left the lake, hit a bank on the shoreline and struck several trees.Ê Richcreek was pronounced dead at the location of the crash site.

Speed appears to be a factor in the accident at this time and the investigation into this crash continues by the KCSO accident investigation team.

Blue Lake Township Fire & Rescue Station 4 and Kalkaska EMS assisted at the scene.
