KALKASKA Ñ Dorrine Wilson was honored at a Michigan WORKS! luncheon in Lansing on Feb. 6 and by the Workforce Development Board of the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, which administers KAL TEC, on Feb. 12 in Traverse City.

Wilson was chosen from a pool of more than 600 people who received career counseling in the district.Ê

Wilson was laid off from a major manufacturing company when it closed in the spring of 2004, after 23 years of employment.

Ê She discovered that she could complete her high school credits in the Kalkaska Michigan WORKS! CenterÕs learning lab, working at her own pace.Ê She received her high school diploma in June of 2005.

WilsonÕs career advisor, Belinda Cook, encouraged her to explore new career options and training programs. Wilson attended the KAL-TEC Basic Healthcare Training and discovered that healthcare was a good fit for her.Ê This training prepared her to then enter Certified Nurse Aid training, which she successfully completed in August, 2006.

Wilson was hired by Kalkaska Memorial Health Center immediately after completing the training.Ê

About her new job as a certified nurse aid, Dorrine said, ÒI really enjoy this work. My reward is being able to help others who cannot help themselves.ÓÊ
