Multi-car crash kills McBain man



KALKASKA Ñ Kalkaska County Sheriff William Artress reported the investigation and response to a multi-vehicle fatal accident on Friday, Feb. 9 just past 9 a.m.

The report states that a vehicle traveling southbound on US-131 near Thomas Road and apparently lost control after the driver attempted to stop for a southbound vehicle that was stopped, making a left hand turn off of US-131 on to Thomas Road.

According to the KSO report, the southbound vehicle crossed into the northbound lane of travel and struck the northbound vehicle driven by Elroy Martin Noordhoek of McBain. He was reported dead at the scene, the report said.

A third vehicle that also was northbound and directly behind NoordhoekÕs vehicle was involved in the crash. It ended up turned on its side on the east side of US-131, according to the report.

There were no other injuries reported at the scene of the crash. Northern A-1 Sanitation reportedly was brought on scene to clean up the diesel fuel on the roadway, shoulder and the ditch area as the fuel tanks of the truck ruptured during the crash.

The report notes it was snowing at the time of the accident. KSO reported the following departments assisted at the scene and with rerouting traffic on US-131 around the scene of the crash: Kalkaska Village Police Department, Kalkaska Advance Life Support, Kalkaska Township Station 7 Fire and Rescue and Boardman Township Station 9 Fire and Rescue responded to assist at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kalkaska County Accident Investigation Team and an officer from the Motor Carrier Division of MPSC.
