Kalkaska wrestlers beat Boyne

BOYNE CITY - Experience was the difference in last Thursday night's Lake Michigan Conference dual wrestling match.

The home team has only three players who have any appreciable mat time. Kalkaska exploited that weakness for a 42-21 victory.

Each team had several open weight classes. In fact, there were three that both voided: 103, 130 and 171 pounds.

James Boyce was the first Blazer wrestler to actually compete on the mat in the lower weight divisions.

It wasn't a positive experience, however. Boyce lost by a pin in 3 minutes, 8 seconds to Adam Brown.

Kalkaska gave the Ramblers six points when it voided 119 pounds to Nate Haley, but recouped those with a forfeit win by Luke Gillespie at 125 pounds.

Nathan Hayden at 135 pounds and Aaron Prentis at 140 received unchallenged victories for the Blazers.

Wes McFadden then lost by a fall to Boyne's talented Cody Wilmot in 5:30 at 145 pounds, and Dave Chalker dropped a 9-4 decision to Drew Nohel at 152.

But the Blazers stopped the Ramblers' streak when Andrew Adams pinned Chris Kirkby in 1:04 at 160.

After both teams voided 171, Erik Hayes picked up a forfeit win at 189. Steven Popp pinned Nate Texidor in 1:19 at 215, and Matt Pare won by a fall in 1:30 over Jose Hernandez at 285.

The Blazers are at home Thursday night for a league match with Charlevoix starting at 6 p.m.
