No races but lots of rides at Winterfest



KALKASKA - On Monday, Jan. 15, Ken Waichunas, Winterfest board chairman confirmed that the International Sled Dog Race Association races had been cancelled.

ÒHowever,Ó Waichunas said, ÒThere still will be dog sled rides and people who will bring their dogs and sleds to train.Ó

Winterfest will happen Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 20 and 21 at the Kalkaska County Fairgrounds.

ÒRegardless of snow conditions, we will have the dog pull and all of the kids events,Ó Waichunas said.

Both weekend days will start off with the Kiwanis Pancake breakfast at 7:30 in the morning. The craft show and silent auction will take place throughout the weekend.

The childrenÕs posters will be on display for everyone to enjoy. Lunch will be available each day, prepared by the Kalkaska Commission on Aging and the Eagles. The Army will have their rock wall at Winterfest to challenge climbing skills.

There will be dog pull contests throughout the weekend, regardless of snow conditions.

Two Taste of Kalkaska events have been scheduled. On Saturday, Trout Town Cafe will sponsor a chili taste test and on Sunday, GÕs Pizza will sponsor a pizza taste test. Those wishing to partake in the tasting will be charged one dollar for a couple of tastes. The proceeds will go to the Special Olympics, according to Waichunas.
