Milk Carton Race added to Winterfest

KALKASKA - What is a milk carton sled race? It will be a new event at the Kalkaska Winterfest, scheduled for Jan. 19 and 20.

Sleds will be made from milk cartons, plastic milk jugs or cardboard. One person must be in the sled while one or two persons pull the sled. The team must pull the sled 20 yards and the fastest time will win the age category. Anyone can enter this event, from children, on up. In addition to the event winners, a prize for the most original design will also be given for each age group. Remember, sleds are to be constructed out of cardboard, plastic milk jugs, and/or milk cartons. Sleds made from or with components from plastic, wood with steel runners and wood constructed sleds (commercially purchased sleds) will be disqualified.

The race will be scheduled for late Saturday afternoon. The age groups will be formed the day of the race. An entry table will be set up in the civic center near the silent auction and craft show. Tentatively, the race will not be held before 3 p.m.

Another event that is in the planning stages is a snow shoe race that will pit the Special Olympians against any challenger for a course of 20 yards. This is an addition to the scheduled children's snow shoe race. The sign ups for this race will also be at table for the milk carton sled race.

If anyone has time to volunteer some time on Saturday and Sunday, please contact the Greater Kalkaska Area Chamber of Commerce, at 231-258-4647 and leave your name and contact information. Someone form the Winterfest Committee will contact you.Ê
