It contains information about Kalkaska County's land and roads. According to Jim Harper, director of the Michigan State University Extension in Kalkaska, the book is valuable to current and future landowners, hunters and visitors.

Harper said the book is good for three years. It sells for $30 and currently is available at the extension office, located at 605 North Birch Street in Kalkaska.

"It's big news," Harper said last week. "Visitors that come up really love it."

The book is the only fund-raiser held by the 4-H leaders association, according to Harper.

"The clubs do mini-fund-raisers," he said. "This is the only one done by the association as a whole."

MSUE sells between 800 and 900 over a three year period, Harper said.

"Out of each month, we have to set aside money from the sale to pay for the next printing," he said. "One hundred percent of the rest of it is for kids' use in the county."

He added that it will benefit about 300 children - not just 4-H members - in the greater Kalkaska community.

Harper said that participants in archery, swim lessons and day camps, benefit from the sale of the Plat Book.
