Winterfest a go



KALKASKA -Winterfest is a "go,Ó snow or no snow, according to Ken Waichunas, the Winterfest board chairman. The event will happen Saturday and Sunday, January 20 and 21st at Kalkaska County Fairgrounds.

"If there is sufficient snow, the Midwest International Dog Sled Race will take place and dog sled rides will be available,Ó Waichunas said. "Regardless of snow conditions, we will have the dog pull and all of the kids events.Ó

Both weekend days will start off with the Kiwanis Pancake breakfast at 7:30 in the morning. The craft show and silent auction will take place throughout the weekend.

The childrenŐs posters will be on display for everyone to enjoy. Lunch will be available each day, prepared by the Kalkaska Commission on Aging and the Eagles.

The following childrenŐs activities will take place during the weekend: face painting, snow shoe race, snowball archery, snow sack race and the three legged race. The Army will have their rock wall at Winterfest to challenge climbing skills.

The dog pull contests will occur throughout the weekend, regardless of snow.

The Boy Scouts will have plenty of hot chocolate and "sŐmoresÓ available along with warm campfires to keep the chill off of everyone.

The full schedule of events is:

Saturday and Sunday Kiwanis breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; Dog weight pull begins at 11 a.m.; Lunch from noon to 5 p.m. by the Kalkaska Commission on Aging and the Eagles; Antique snowmobile display; Auction of dog sled built and donated by Tom Edge; Horse drawn rides; Crafts; Vendors; Silent auction (Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.); Campfire; Jazz band on Saturday; ChildrenŐs outdoor games; Hockey events at the Kaliseum.

There is no fee to enter the event but donations of either money or food to park will go to KAIR.
