She's just that type of person. Personal goals come second to the team's accomplishments. The historic implications of her achievement aren't lost on Krause. It's just that she puts the team first and her individual records second. Helping the Blazers win a Lake Michigan Conference title is her main focus. And she realizes that she can't do it alone. She knows it takes all five players on the floor executing as one to make things click. With her quiet and unassuming personality, Krause has gained the respect and admiration of her teammates. Everyone understands that defenses are likely to double team Krause in an attempt to stop her, and that will leave someone else open. If they have a clear shot at the basket, either Krause or one of the other Blazers will get them the ball. She's a very likeable person, making it easier for her teammates to revel in her achievements. There was no showy demonstration after the historic basket with Krause. Just the acknowledgement of her teammates' congratulations. "We had such a big lead that we didn't keep the starters in for too long in the second half," Kalkaska head coach David Dalton said. "But, we got Katie that last basket and took her out of the game so she could get a nice ovation from the crowd. It was a neat moment." After that, it was back to work. What was most important to her was that the team won, improving its record to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the league. She wasn't even the leading scorer against East Jordan, finishing with 13 points. "People will remember that she scored 1,000 points, but far more than that they'll remember the thousands of kind acts she's done for people," Dalton said. "She's just so thoughtful and kind to everyone. When people remember her, they're going to remember how sweet and kind she was. "Everybody that knows her, knows that about her. There are a lot of good people in the world, but she's exceptional." Rather than walk around with an air of arrogance, Krause is more concerned with providing encouraging words to her teammates. If someone is having an off night, Krause is one of the first players to give them a pat on the back and tell them to hang with it. Dalton values Krause as a team leader, both on and off the court. With her example to follow, the Blazers have all bought into the unselfish attitude it takes to be a champion. They are certainly off to a great start in achieving that goal. |
