Bay Reps hockey drops two straight

KALKASKA - It's getting a little frustrating for the Grand Traverse Bay Reps.

They're not playing with enough consistency, and that has led to back-to-back losses.

Sault Ste. Marie jumped out to a 2-0 lead and rolled to a 6-2 victory over the Bay Reps at Centre Ice in Traverse City.

It scored on a power play goal in the second period to make it 3-1.

Brandon Ferguson narrowed it to a two-goal deficit with a goal in the third period on an assist from Ryan Farley with 9:49 left.

The Sault scored a power play goal two minutes later, however, to regain its three-goal advantage at 4-1.

Andrew Zielinski tallied a power play goal for the Bay Reps. Dan Tinkle (Kalkaska) and Anthony Arbour had the assists on the goal that made it 4-2.

Coach Rex Luxton pulled his goalie for a man advantage for the Reps, but the Sault scored on an empty-netter with 23 seconds to play. The Sault scored an even-strength goal at the 11-second mark.

"We have some inconsistencies to overcome," Luxton said. "We'll play for a while, and then we'll let up, and let in some easy goals.

"Then we'll play well, and so forth. I was particularly happy with the way we came back in the third period after being down 3-0. We got back in the game a couple of times.

"But, when you dig yourself a hole like that, it's pretty tough to come back in one period."

Cody Linhurst was in goal for the Sault and finished the game with 18 saves.

"They had some breakaways, and the power play hurt us."

Not much changed for the Reps the next night, when they lost a 3-0 game to Rockford at the Kaliseum in Kalkaska.

Rockford scored a goal in the first period, and added two power play goals in the second. Grand Traverse couldn't recover.

"We just couldn't match their skating," Luxton said. "We played them pretty well except for those two power play goals in the second period.

"It's a little frustrating. We're having some trouble putting the puck in the net right at the moment. That's going to be the big emphasis in practice."

Andrew Mills was in net for the Reps and made 22 saves.

The Bay Reps competed in the Christmas Tournament at Centre Ice in Traverse City last weekend.
