Winners rewarded with party

KALKASKA - Shouts of "We won!" rang through the halls of Birch Street Elementary School, as the first graders in Lisa Sutton's class gathered to pose with some of the food they were donating to Kalkaska Area Interfaith Resources for food baskets.

"You're going swimming next Wednesday," Matt Price, school counselor, told the students.

The students in all 16 classrooms of the kindergarten through third grade school were inspired by a swim party at the Kaliseum, for the winning class. A total of 2,523 cans and food items were brought to school for KAIR, over a two week period. Donations included peanut butter, noodles and toiletries.

"They did a really good job," Price said. "It's not just lima beans and beets."

According to Price, the idea was presented by the Parent Teacher Association. "We wanted to have an incentive," Price said. "We wanted something healthy."

Price said that one of the first grade students came up with a memorable quote: "When kids have full bellies, they have happy hearts."
