The Leader & The Kalkaskian continues to grow and look toward the future, while
building on its past.
The weekly newspaper offers the best in local news and sports coverage, while
helping meet the ever expanding needs of advertisers and businesses by providing
its customers excellent customer service.
The Leader has a tradition of serving the communities of Kalkaska County that
goes back nearly a century. But the history of the weekly publication actually
dates back more than 130 years ago, making it one of the oldest businesses in
the county.
At one time, there were two newspapers serving Kalkaska — The Kalkaskian, first
printed in March 1874, with Charles Sweet serving as the editor and publisher.
That was followed by The Leader, which printed its first edition in May 1878.
The two competitors merged to for The Leader & The Kalkaskian in 1910, under the
ownership of Will DePuy, the son of local Civil War veteran Charles DePuy.
Since then, The Leader has seen numerous changes in leadership and ownership.
The newspaper, along with its sister publications The Antrim County News
(Bellaire), Citizen-Journal (Boyne City), The Town Meeting (Elk Rapids) and the
Star Penny-Stretcher were most recently purchased by the Journal RegisterCo.,
based in Yardley, PA in 2004.
The five local publications form Up North Publications, a division of Morning
Star Publications in Mt. Pleasant.
The Leader office is located at 318 N. Cedar St. (US-131) in Kalkaska, the
county seat of a county that features all the charms of northern Michigan.
There’s plenty to see and do in Kalkaska County — the home of the National Trout
Festival during the last full weekend each April — no matter the season, with
its variety of lakes and rivers.
